Pierre Keller

(Gilly, 1945 – Grandvaux, 2019)

Biography

Pierre Keller (1945–2019) was a Swiss artist, designer, and educator known for his multidisciplinary approach and for playing a transformative role in Swiss visual culture. Born in Lausanne, he studied graphic arts and design at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Keller emerged as a conceptual and experimental artist, engaging with political and social themes. His work spanned painting, photography, installations, and visual design—often infused with irony and critical commentary. In parallel with his artistic practice, he developed a strong presence in visual communication, collaborating with cultural institutions and Swiss brands.

In 1995, Keller became director of the École cantonale d’art de Lausanne (ECAL), a position he held until 2011. Under his leadership, ECAL gained international recognition as one of Europe’s leading art and design schools. He invited key figures from the global design and art scenes and made ECAL a reference point in international exhibitions and design fairs.

Keller played a central role in promoting Swiss design, acting as president of the Vaud Fine Arts Museum Foundation and organizing Swiss Design showcases at major events like the Milan Furniture Fair. He also collaborated with innovative Swiss companies such as Freitag and curated exhibitions exploring the link between art, communication, and landscape.

Beyond the arts, Keller was civically engaged: he served as a local official in Lavaux, contributing to the cultural development of the UNESCO-listed wine-growing region. His love for wine, nature, and community was deeply embedded in both his personal life and creative endeavors.

Pierre Keller passed away in 2019, leaving behind a significant legacy in Swiss cultural life. He is remembered as a visionary who successfully bridged creativity, education, and cultural entrepreneurship into one impactful career.
