Sabine Lepsius

Sabine Lepsius, born Sabine Graef (Berlin, 15 January 1864 – Bayreuth, 22 November 1942), was a German painter and portraitist who played a significant role in Berlin’s artistic and intellectual life around the turn of the twentieth century. Raised in an artistic family, she was the daughter of painter Gustav Graef and painter and lithographer Franziska Liebreich. Her father provided her early artistic training, and she soon developed a particular talent for portraiture.

In 1892, she married the painter Reinhold Lepsius. Together they became prominent figures within Berlin’s cultural circles. Their portraits, influenced by Impressionism and the modern Berlin school of painting, were highly regarded among members of the upper bourgeoisie, intellectual community, and financial and industrial elite.

Sabine Lepsius was associated with the Berlin Secession, founded in 1898 as an alternative to Germany’s conservative official art institutions, and exhibited with the group until 1913. Earlier, in 1893, her work had been shown at the Woman’s Building during the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

Beyond her career as an artist, Lepsius was an important cultural hostess. The salon she maintained with her husband in Berlin-Westend became a meeting place for leading intellectuals and writers, including Georg Simmel, Wilhelm Dilthey and Rainer Maria Rilke. She also maintained a particularly close friendship with the poet Stefan George.

Lepsius produced hundreds of portraits, depicting women, children and prominent members of Berlin society with psychological sensitivity and refined painterly technique. A substantial part of her oeuvre was subsequently lost or destroyed, making her surviving paintings especially important records of German portraiture and cultural life around 1900.
